Maths meets art...

We had some butterflies hatch in our class, so decided to do some butterfly art.
At the same time we used our knowledge of geometry and reflection to design our butterfly wings.

Week four learning conversation

Which meal is more important to have, breakfast or lunch?

Each week we pose a question on Monday which we discuss on Thursday.  The questions don't usually have an obvious correct answer.  We are encouraged to think about and discuss with family and friends the question.  As well as having our own opinion or decision, we should have reasons to back up our answer.

Sumdog.com

Your child should now have a copy of their login and password to sumdog.com
Sumdog is a fun math activity website which helps build number knowledge related to student learning.  (if it is not glued into the back of their reading log notebook, them they didn't have it with them today and it was glued into their poetry book)

Learning conversations

Do you have any ideas for good open questions for our learning conversations?

A good question is one which doesn't have an obvious right or wrong answer.  It should be about an issue or subject that our five and six-year-olds can easily relate to, and discuss with others as they consider alternative viewpoints or gather facts to support their views.

Please comment with your suggestions.

Bring our toys to school?

Should we be allowed to bring toys to school?
We discussed this question and here are the reasons for our decisions...

YES
At daycare you can, so you should be able to at school (Sebastian, agreed with by Luka)
You can play with them if you don't have a friend to play with (Naresh, agreed with by Patai)
Could play with if not playing with someone else (Eva)
To show for news (Chloe)

NO
Might get broken (Sean, Arny)
Might get taken by someone else (Mia, Erin, Luka)
My brother is not allowed to (Lennox)
Might lose it or get mixed up (Azalea, Luka, Ben, Cole, Paige, Danielle, Sebastian)
We already have similar toys at school (Cole, Paige)
Might leave behind at school (Erin, Maggie, Ben)

Better pet: cat or dog?

What would make a better pet, a cat or a dog?
We discussed this question and here are the reasons we gave for our decision...

CAT
Cats come back (Arny)
Cats are furry and purr (Danielle)
Cats don't scratch (Sarjev)
Dog might eat budgie or fish (Sean)
Cats cover their poo (Mia)

DOG
You can play with them at the park (Eva)
Cat might eat my chickens (Luka)
Dogs are nice and friendly (Chloe)
--- But some dogs are mad, like mine (Ben)
Dogs can play frisbee (Lennox)
Dogs fetch stuff and lift big bones (Sebastian)
You can take dogs for a walk (Naresh)
Cats eat bones off the table (Patai)

Week Two Poem

Welcome to our classroom
Come in and sit right down
We are all together
Take a look around.
Here inside our classroom
There's lots to see and do
I am happy being here
And making friends with you.
